MaximsNewsNetwork: HAITI - CAMP RELOCATION in JACMEL (UN MINUSTAH)Oct 16, 2010
MaximsNewsNetwork: 13 July 2010 - UN MINUSTAH: Jacmel, Haiti - Hundreds of families living in camps in Jacmel wait to return home as the UN Mission in Haiti, the International Organization for Migration and NGOs work with the Haitian government to rebuild houses and eventually relocate them back to their homes. Jacmel, 30 kms south east of Port au Prince, in a district called Wolf. It is not far away from the camps. Here, the former camp residents are meeting with OIM, the International Organization for Migration. Among them there is also Marie Michelle Antoine. She left with her children the camp Wolf 2 and returned in her previous house. OIM prepares with the former IDP's the first distribution of food as part of the program of the relocation. Ben ODUWA from OIM coordinates this project. In Jacmel several hundreds families live in the camps "Wolf" and "Pinchina". The families live under difficult conditions. The town hall would like people to return as soon as possible to their old houses. Once local administration has approved the demolition and afterwards the rebuilding of the destroyed houses, the German NGO 'Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe', starts working in the houses in Jacmel. The focus is on the houses which have owners. The result of this co-operation between the Diakonie and the town hall is very positive. Outside of the city Jacmel, OIM prepares its very first food distribution to the former IDP's. The rations are for 3 weeks: dry food for 2 weeks and already ...

Haiti EvictionFeb 02, 2012
During a recent delegation to Haiti, actor and chair of TransAfrica Danny Glover, along with Let Haiti Live director Melinda Miles and TransAfrica President Nicole Lee. along with Co-Director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research Mark Weisbrot and Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Fellow Ify Ike, arrived in the midst of the eviction to try to stop the homeless earthquake survivors from being forcibly removed. The landowner explains that 19 months after the earthquake, various NGOs have visited the camp, known as Barbancourt 17, but none have offered alternatives or relocation to the IDPs living there. Director of Bri Kouri Nouvèl Gaye, Etant Dupain, attempts to mediate with the landowner while we await the arrival of Haitian human rights lawyer Mario Joseph who will push for a legal process to determine ownership of the land before an eviction can move forward. UN peacekeeping soldiers with MINUSTAH look on and photograph the exchange. For more information: brikourinouvelgaye.com, http www.transafrica.org
MaximsNewsNetwork: HAITI CAMP RELOCATION DANGERS (UN MINUSTAH)Aug 24, 2010
MaximsNewsNetwork: 12 April 2010 - UN MINUSTAH: Port-au-Prince, Haiti - Some of the first earthquake survivors are relocated from the largest refugee camp in Port-au-Prince sheltering an estimated 50000 people. Officials say the move is mainly to relocate some 7500 inhabitants of the camp who are currently in danger of mudslides. SOUNDBITE (Creole) Displaced Woman: We have to move. Its Gods will. United Nations (UN) and United States (US) officials recommended that the internally displaced people are relocated within the next ten days because the camp, located at the Petionville golf course, are at high risk of flooding or mudslides when the rainy season starts. Relocating several thousand people, however, is proving to be a challenge. On Saturday (10 April), when the relocation started, about 20 families were moved. Yesterday (11 April) some 250 families were scheduled to be relocated but only about 60 people made it. The relocation operation is a joint venture between UN, Jenkins-Penn Haiti Releif Organization and several other non-profit relief agencies. Actor Sean Penn was in the camp helping Haitians move. SOUNDBITE (English) Major Ivo Werneck, Transport Planner: We have the boarding process, the movement itself and we have the debarkation process. The boarding process is up to CRS and J/P HRO to do all the registration, the selection, preparing and providing all the proper information to people who want to voluntary move from here to new site in Corail Cesselesse ...
